How to Adopt

Orphan Acres has placed over 3,530 horses in loving, forever homes since 1975. Our standard adoption fee is $500. The adoption fee helps offset any costs the animal accrued while in our care.

If horses are leaving the state of Idaho, they must have a current health certificate and a negative Coggins test. In addition, the state of Idaho charges between $38 and $60 for a brand inspection fee to officially transfer ownership of the horse. The cost also depends on whether a horse is moving states. These additional costs are the financial responsibility of the adopter.

We always have a variety of horses available for adoption. Some are very well trained, and others are not yet started. If you are interested in adopting but don’t have a specific horse in mind, you can fill out our questionnaire here. We will come up with a few suggestions for you! If you are interested in adopting a specific horse please fill out, scan, and email an adoption application, found here, to our horse manager codeereid@gmail.com.

Anyone looking to adopt a horse is encouraged to stop by and meet our horses in person. You never know when you will form an unexpected connection with an animal! We simply ask that you call ahead and schedule a time so that we make sure someone is available to show you around.

Orphan Acres, Inc reserves the right to deny the adoption of any horse if we feel it is in the horse’s best interest to remain at the rescue. A home or stable inspection may be required for adoption
